it’s absolutely correct that “the west” does not want Imran Khan in power but it’s not for this reason. ideology affects all state actors but only to an extent. yes, individually there are many islamophobic people within the U.S. establishment. however, the main driving force behind their actions are often material reasons. in Pakistan’s case, a country like the U.S. simply does not want to “lose influence” (i.e. let the country operate with true independence) on a nuclear armed state that is in the vicinity of India, Afghanistan, and China. letting Imran Khan come to power could mean resistance to the fauj, increased radicalism within the populace, etc., which could undermine U.S. involvement in our government.

In contrast, Pakistan muslim league was created by Zia Ul haq and Pakistan people's party was created with assistance from Ayub Khan. So you can figure out who are the real military puppets from the start.

I think he did come in power with the establishment's assistance, like every other PM before him. But your logic of the establishment derailing him doesn't make sense since they also helped Bhutto but hanged him once he went against their policies, brought NS to power and then ousted him once he went against their policies. The problem with Imran khan was that personally he wasn't corrupt like the other two families and didn't build his own empire like the others, which didn't leave the establishment with many weaknesses they could exploit. Plus the economic situation of the country is too weak to survive even a few years or martial law, they can't outright kill him due to international repercussions, but can't have him in power as well.

If you’re truly a democratic leader, you would never negotiate with the establishment, you would always sit with political parties despite how corrupt they were because you would trust the judgement of the people to see the corruption and elect the correct individuals. 


IK during his tenure was great as PR front face for the establishment but he also led them to the brink where the country was approaching default due to his poor governance and ability to manage financial situation. This led establishment to seek someone else hence the electables getting withdrawn and the no confidence vote. 

Clever thing IK did was that on the way out, he set the stage to burn the whole house down aka massive fuel subsidies and completely ignoring the commitments made to IMF and setting the stage for financial default. This wasn’t helped that the current idiots didn’t go to election straight after the no confidence vote. If the election was held in 2022, majority of the population wouldn’t have voted for IK because of his poor governance performance. 

Following the new establishment tenure, there was resolve to get the country out of its current financial situation but what they underestimate is the current sentiment of young generation which has access to digital platforms who have deep mistrust of any authority as well as due to low literacy rate have a herd mentality of following blindly - just look at the extra judicial murders of anyone accused of blasphemy in this country.

I’m in no way a supporter of current set up or IK and they all want a free ride on the lap of establishment hence IK is no better than the rest of them. Remember IK is in his 70s and that’s why he fighting so hard to return to government quickly before he is too old to be even bothered. Otherwise he would wait like others did and pick his time after a new establishment comes but he is not. 

Anyone thinking IK is not establishment loving, should just ask why does he only want to negotiate with them every time? He did the same in 2014 and 2017 protests and he is doing the same now. If you can’t even see it after all this, you’re not a critical thinker and won’t see it until you choose to open your mind.

IK had already made good gains in 2013 without the establishment's aid. So I don't think it's true that aligning with the army is the only way. Just don't criticize them openly and direct all your rhetoric towards competing parties.

There's also the fact that Khan continued relying on the military and generally authoritarian tactics to crack down on dissent while in office. And that he expanded their powers during his tenure and showered them praises.

With that said he is far from a puppet. He has his own motivations, interests and goals. But just because he wasn't the army's puppet doesn't mean he wasn't in bed with them.

Sounds nice but let’s be honest the moment the army would’ve gone against Khan and approached PMLN, PMLN would’ve jumped ship to get into power. I mean this is exactly what happened with PDM.
